John E. Linn Jr.
John E. Linn Jr., 84, died
Wednesday (Nov. 19, 2008) at Asbury Park Healthcare in Newton. He was born May
15, 1924, in Wakonda, S.D., to John Elroy Sr. and Carrie (Jenzen) Linn. They
preceded him in death. John and his family moved to Newton in 1936, where he
attended Newton High School. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943. He
worked in the medical corps in the Asian Pacific. He served in the Northern
Solomons and Southern Philippines campaigns. He received a letter of commendation
for evacuating wounded soldiers under enemy mortar and hazardous shell fire in
the jungle trails of the Pacific.
After leaving the Army, he
chose a career as an automotive parts manager for Ford. He worked for them for
more than 40 years.
John was a quiet man who
enjoyed sports. He particularly enjoyed K.U. athletics, and he was an avid
Cardinals fan.
He enjoyed participating in
the New Creation Day Care at Asbury Park, especially when the children called
him 'Grandpa John.'
He is survived by his
sisters, Gena Becker of Newton and Carolee Brown of Wichita; and a brother,
Clinton Linn of Denton, Texas.
Visitation will be from 1 to
5 p.m. today at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton.
Graveside service will be at
10 a.m. Saturday at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton, with Chaplain Jay Anderson
officiating.

made to Asbury Park in care of the funeral home.
