Moore, Mattie K 'Peggy'

The Newton Kansan

Mattie K. 'Peggy' Moore

Mattie K. 'Peggy' Moore passed from this earth on Sunday (Oct. 26, 2008) at Kidron Bethel Healthcare Center in North Newton at the age of 87.

She was born Dec. 17, 1920, in Strong City, Okla., to Samuel Richard and Margaret Elma Moore. She attended schools in Hammon, Okla., where she graduated from high school, and Weatherford, Okla., where she attended college.

Peggy married William O. 'Todd' Moore on June 1, 1939, in Hammon. Todd brought three wonderful children into this marriage: Bobbie June, Jo Nell and William Douglas. 'Todd' and 'Peggy,' as they preferred to be called, had two sons, Samuel A. and Pat, to complete the family.

For eight years after they married, Todd and Peggy labored and struggled on rented farms near Reed, Okla. In 1947, they moved to Mangum, Okla., in order to make a living. With this change in their lives, Peggy added to her jobs of farm wife, mother and homemaker, full-time employment working in the tax assessors office of Greer County, Okla.

She later began working as a caseworker for the Oklahoma Department of Public Welfare, eventually transferring to Guymon, Okla., in the same caseworker capacity. Peggy became the Texas County director of public welfare in 1980 and retired in 1983 after 34 years with the department.

Peggy accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior at the age of 9. She was baptized at the Assembly of God Church in Hammon, Okla. 'Mother Peggy,' as she was known to her grandchildren, was a strong Christian role model for her entire family and wanted nothing more than for each of them to 'walk in truth.' She provided never-ending inspiration and encouragement for each of her family, friends and acquaintances. She was a life-long member of First Baptist Church, Guymon.

Peggy was a committed and loving wife to her husband, darling mother to her children and sweet 'Mother Peggy' to her grandchildren. We fearlessly relinquish her to our Heavenly Father, who has faithfully met all her earthly needs and who we know will meet her heavenly needs.

Peggy was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, William O. 'Todd' Moore; three sisters, Mary Campbell, Fleta Hill and Bonnie Malson; one brother, Woodrow Moore; one stepson, William Douglas Moore; and a beloved son-in-law, Calvin Mitchell.

Survivors include two daughters, June Mitchell of Guymon and Jo Nell Thornton and husband, Jim, of Pawhuska, Okla,; one daughter-in-law, Hilda Moore of Mangum, Okla.; and two sons, Samuel A. Moore and wife, Verena, of La Habra, Calif., and Pat Moore and wife, Susan, of Hesston; 19 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Guymon, with Pastor Derek Cox officiating.

Graveside services and interment will follow at Elmhurst Cemetery in Guymon under the direction of Henson-Novak Funeral Directors.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home in Guymon.

A memorial has been established for the Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children in care of Henson-Novak Funeral Directors, P.O. Box 1306, Guymon, OK 73942.
