Velma B. (Goertz) Dyck

Velma B. (Goertz) Dyck, 93, passed away Wednesday (August 13, 2008) at Sunshine Home in Buhler.

Velma was born June 4, 1915, on a farm near Gotebo, Okla., to David H. and Lena (Reimer) Goertz. She had three sisters, Ella (Krause), Nora (Daubert), and Rosa (Quiring).

She graduated from Gotebo High School. Soon after graduation, she moved to Newton, where she worked at FW Woolworth's and later at the Bethel Deaconess Hospital in Newton.

She was baptized in the Ebenezer Mennonite Church in Gotebo by the Rev. Hege, who also was one of her high school teachers.

After moving to Newton, she married John W. Dyck, and they moved to the Emmaus community. To their union was born one daughter, Sharon Kay.

Velma transferred her membership to Emmaus Mennonite Church and later, when they moved back to Newton, she and John transferred their membership to First Mennonite Church. For the past 10 years, she lived at Sunshine Villa in Buhler.

She is survived by a brother-in-law, Ralph Quiring of North Newton; sister-in-law, Helen Dyck of West Plains, Mo.; daughter, Sharon and husband, Don Ratzloff, of Buhler; granddaughter, Michelle and husband, Mark Harrington, and their children, Sarah and Erin, all of Newton; granddaughter, Melissa and husband, Rick Daley, and their children, Colton Lane and LouAnn, all of Hutchinson; many nephews and nieces; and a host of friends.

Velma was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Dyck, in 1988; and her sisters, Ella, Nora and Rosa.

Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Buhler Mortuary.

Interment will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Restlawn Garden of Memories in Newton, with funeral service following at 11 a.m. at Buhler Mortuary, with Pastor Bob Dalke presiding.

Memorials may be made to either Buhler Sunshine Home or Buhler Mennonite Church.
