Nancy Kay (Hertzler) Powell
passed away Saturday (Aug. 15, 2008) in Marin County, Calif., after a 25-year
struggle with scleroderma.
Nancy Kay Hertzler was born
Feb. 7, 1939, in Stafford. She and her family, Dr. John and Leah Hertzler,
moved to Newton after World War II.
She graduated from Newton
High School and attended The University of Kansas, earning a bachelor of arts
degree.
She became a registered
occupational therapist, and she worked early in her career with challenged
children in the San Diego school system.
She married Don Powell of
Hutchinson in November 1961. She had two children: M. Scott Powell, 43, of
Southport, Conn., and Jeffrey J. Powell, 40, of Mill Valley, Calif.
Mr. and Mrs. Powell were
longtime residents of Houston, Texas, where Mr. Powell retired as CEO of Van
Kampen Investments (formerly American Capital Research and Management).
She is survived by her
immediate family; a brother, Jerrod Hertzler of Omaha, Neb.; and five
grandchildren.
Public visitation will be
from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, with the family
receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Her funeral will be at 10
a.m. Friday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel in Newton, with the Rev. Nathan
Morgan presiding.
Burial will follow in the
Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.
