Rosa Camargo

1927 - 2018

Obituary

Rosa "Rosie" Palacioz Camargo, 90, went peacefully to her heavenly home on Friday (April 20, 2018) at Kidron Bethel Village, North Newton.

Rosie was born Aug. 30, 1927, in Florence to Alejandro Palacioz and Lucia Enriquez. She graduated from Florence High School in 1946. After high school, Rosie ventured to Newton in search of employment. She began her working career at Axtell Hospital as a nurses's aide. She also worked at her sister's (Bobbie Hernandez) restaurant and tavern located on Fourth Street in Newton.

In 1949, Rosie married Trino Camargo at Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel located in the Ranchito area on First Street in Newton. Rosie and Trino were blessed with four children: Veronica, Ric, Marty and Regina (who passed away as a 22-day-old infant in 1962).

As taught by her faith, Rosie remained a very active member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church for a total of 70 years. Her giving of self to her parish was exemplified by the many ministries she served. She served on the original altar society ministry, holding every office several times for several years. She also served as a catechism and first communion instructor, lector, choir member, building campaign committee member (1959), renovation campaign member (1987), prayer blanket member, Eucharistic Minister, home bound minister, church cleaning ministry and with Daughters of Isabella, just to mention a few.

But Rosie had a passion for working with the youth of the parish. She and Trino were CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) adult advisors for several years and were awarded the Pro Deo et Juvetute award in 1971 for their service. They both were also awarded the Eccezionale Vonlontario Cattolico award for their volunteer work in 1989.

In 1973, Rosie was recognized by the Newton community as the Woman of the Year, "Church and Religion," for her many years of dedication and service to her parish.

Rosie was always also involved in the community. Serving on the Newton Housing Authority Board for five years, with Harvey County RSVP and for many years as district chairman for local city elections. She was also PTA secretary, vice-president and president at Lincoln school.

In 1966, she began her career at USD 373 at Cooper School Reading Center and advanced to the position of secretary at Santa Fe Junior High, which was the most enjoyable and rewarding highlight of her career. Rosie retired in 1988.

Rosie was preceded in death by her parents, Alejandro and Lucia; stepmother, Concepcion Gonzalez; her husband of 52 years, Trino; daughter, Regina; grandson, John Paul Camargo; brothers: Crestino and Senon Palacioz, and Luis, Carmen, David, Bernie and Ruben Gonzalez; sisters: Simona Palacioz, Barbara Hernandez, Lola Fierro Pryor, Ciprana Vasquez, and Guadalupe and Altagracia Gonzalez.

She is survived by her children: Veronica Haynes of Denver, Ric Camargo of Wichita and Marty Camargo of Newton; five grandchildren: Ricki Camargo (Jamie) of Austin, Texas; Gabriel Haynes (Cristina) of Orlando, Florida; Juan and Maya Haynes, both of Denver, and Jeris Camargo of Wichita; great-grandchildren: Aslyn and Zaharah Haynes of Orlando, Florida, Antonio Haynes of Denver and Graciella and Emiliana Camargo of Austin, Texas; sisters, Petra Martinez of Fresno, California, and Marta Kinkaid of Wichita; brother, Carlos Gonzalez of Florida; and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends nationwide.

The Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 6 p.m. Sunday (April 29, 2018), with the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Monday (April 30, 2018), both at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Newton. Interment will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Newton.

Memorial contributions can be made in the name of Rosie to Our Lady of Guadalupe prayer blanket and food pantry ministries.

Condolences may be left at www.broadwaycolonialfh.com.
