Obituary

Freddie A. Lyon, 80, died Tuesday (May 8, 2018) at Newton Medical Center. He was born May 3, 1938, in Springdale, Arkansas, to Jesse and Blanche (Medlin) Lyon. On Sept. 18, 1959, he married Genevieve Boese and she survives.

He moved from Springdale, Arkansas, to Newton in 1951.

Freddie was a long-time active member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Newton. As part of his faithful stewardship to the church, he built many of the church's furnishings and cared for the building through the years.

Freddie was retired as head of maintenance from the former United Methodist Youthville after 26 years of faithful service to the Youthville community. During his time at Youthville, he made an impact on the many youth as a positive role model. Freddie and Jenny also served as foster parents for nearly four years.

He served his country for nine years in the Army National Guard, being deployed to help people during natural disasters.

Freddie had a love of wood working and used his skills to build furniture and many cherished items for friends and family though the years.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Genevieve (Jenny) Lyon of the home; daughter, Annette and her husband Donald E. Andersen of Lyons; grandson, Scott M. Andersen of Muskogee, Oklahoma; and siblings: Elaine Lyon of Marcellus, New York, Rebecca Voth of Olathe, Richard and his wife Rita Lyon of Olathe, Robert Lyon of Hutchinson, Donna and her husband Wesley Duerksen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Darlene and her husband Mike Watkins of Newton and William and his wife Eva of Conway, Arkansas. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and his cherished "grand dogs."

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday (May 14, 2018) at First Church of the Nazarene in Newton, with The Reverend J. Jay Hawes presiding. Visitation will be 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday (May 13, 2018) at Petersen Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.

Memorials are suggested to Cancer Center of Kansas in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
