Obituary

Allan G. Nickel, 79, of Newton, died Monday (May 14, 2018) at the Kansas Christian Home.

He was born on Jan. 6, 1939, in Newton, the son of Carl and Grace Unruh Nickel. Allan attended a one-room country school for the first eight years, then graduated from Newton High School in 1957. After graduating, he went to work for Hesston Manufacturing.

Allan married Lenora Voth on Aug. 12, 1960, at the Grace Hill Mennonite Church of rural Whitewater. They moved to Indianapolis for voluntary service as an orderly in a hospital. They had three daughters: Michelle, Marcelette (Marci) and Janelle. As a family, they enjoyed camping and gardening.

In his spare time he took correspondence courses that eventually led him to being a tool designer at Hesston Manufacturing, which would later become AGCO, where he worked for 43 years.

After Allan's father died, he and his brother, Dwight, moved back to the family farm and would farm together until Allan's health prohibited him from being involved.

Allan was interested in politics and was actively involved with Farm Bureau, serving on the Harvey County Board. For a number of times, he served as the local board president.

On June 4, 1988, he married Sharon Vogt Hiebert. To this union were brought three more children: Doug and Penny Hiebert, Lonnie Hiebert and Gail Hiebert.

Allan loved traveling. He took the train to Tacoma, Washington, to see his sister, Janice, and her family. Other memorable trips were to the Indian Passageway, Alaska, Australia and New Zealand.

He was a member of Grace Community Church, where he served in various ways for 25 years.

Allan is preceded in death by his first wife, Lenora; baby daughter, Michelle; parents; and various sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon of Newton; daughters: Marci Lehner and husband Robert of Abilene and Janelle Nickel of Newton; along with Doug Hiebert and wife Penny, Lonnie Hiebert and wife Debra, all of rural Peabody, and Gail Voth and husband Darrell of Oklahoma City; brother, Dwight Nickel and wife Beverly of rural Newton; sister, Janice Kinsley of Tacoma, Washington; grandchildren: Michael Rhoades, Cory Hiebert and wife Kait, Matthew Hiebert, Mikayla Hiebert, Noah, Lily and Jude Voth; great-granddaughter, Addilyn Hiebert; and nephews, Scott Nickel and wife Tina and Phillip Nickel and wife Jimmie.
