Obituary
Lorton Hayes Rowland, 90, passed away
on Sunday (May 13, 2018) at Newton Medical Center.
Lorton was born on Oct. 8, 1927, to
Charlie and Gertrude Rowland in Newton.
He married Inez Woody on Dec. 25, 1966,
in Los Angeles. Inez valued that he was dependable, had strong
traditional values and a wonderful sense of humor. They were married
for 52 years prior to his passing.
Lorton attended Newton schools and
later joined and served in the United States Marine Corps during
World War II. After the war, he worked for and later retired from the
Santa Fe Railroad. He loved music, especially jazz, and enjoyed
football and basketball. He was a lifelong member of the Second
Missionary Baptist Church of Newton.
He is survived by his wife, Inez
Rowland; sister, Josephine Murphy; daughter, Grace Marie Jordan;
sons, Floyd Edwards and Carl Edwards; and numerous grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; three sisters; two sons, Arbey Edwards and Anthony Edwards;
and daughter, Lacita Davis.
A graveside memorial committal service
will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday (May 22, 2018) at Greenwood Cemetery
in Newton.
A memorial has been established for the
