Obituary
Mildred Melson Cox, 99, passed away
peacefully Sunday (May 27, 2018) at Asbury Park in Newton. She was
born Dec. 9, 1918, on her parent's (George and Bessie Sidener Melson)
farm in the Pleasant Valley community, Chase County. She attended the
Pleasant Valley School Dist. 45, Cedar Point High School and Emporia
Beauty School.
She married Loren Cox on Easter Sunday,
April 9, 1939, in Burns. They farmed in Chase County for many years.
They established the L&M Supermarket in Florence. Mildred took an
active part in the management and ordering for the store. She
contributed a lot to the success of the store.
She was active in the Sky High 4-H club
and later in the Burns United Methodist Church, Eastern Star,
Florence United Methodist Church, Marionettes camping club and Marion
square and round dance clubs. They retired in Florence, and later
moved to retirement facilities in Newton. There, she attended East
Side United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her
husband; her parents; and her brother, Marion and his wife, Lela
Melson.
She is survived by daughter, Lela
(Charles) Heacock; son, Carl (Reta) Cox; grandchildren: Cory (Betty)
Cox, Reko (Larry) Sullivan and Cayl (Shelly) Cox; and
great-grandchildren: Samantha Sullivan, Sabrina Sullivan, Braylin Cox
and Cole Cox.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10
a.m. Friday (June 1, 2018) at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel. A
graveside committal service will be held at Florence Cemetery later
that afternoon. A public visitation will be held from 1 to 5 p.m.
