Obituary

Betty "Belia" Atkinson, 77, died Friday (June 29, 2018) at her home.

She was born on March 2, 1941, in Newton, the daughter of Nicolas and Guadalupe Dominguez Garcia. Betty was a lifelong resident of Newton, graduating from Newton High School. After the death of her mother in 1997, Betty carried on the tradition of family events, dinners and celebrating holidays.

Betty married Richard D. Atkinson, Sr., on April 15, 1961, in Newton. She had been an Aide in the Obstetrics Unit at Bethel Deaconess Hospital. Later she became a seamstress at J & G Enterprises which was a division of PepsiCo. For 15 years she made the bags Pizza Hut used for making home deliveries. Betty then went to work part time at ResCare for 15 years; she dearly loved her clients there.

She was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where she was a member of the Altar Society and had been heavily involved with 13 fund raising projects for community members in need.

Survivors include her husband Richard; son Ronald Atkinson and his companion Kimberly Curiel; sisters Mary Garcia and Carole Martinez all of Newton; and sister-in-law Sandra Roberts of Tarentum, Pennsylvania. Betty is also survived by her adopted grandchildren, Consuelo Alarcon, Segio Cervantes, Micaela Li, Brandon Wentz, Melisa Jackson, as well as her longtime friend Gabi Gomez.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents; son Richard D. Atkinson, Jr.; and brothers Julian Garcia, Marcelo Garcia, and Santiago "Jimmy" Garcia.

The Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 6 p.m. Thursday (July 5, 2018) with the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Friday (July 6, 2018), both at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Newton.

A memorial has been established with the Our Lady of Guadalupe Altar Society's Kitchen Remodel. Contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS, 67114.
