Dallas E. Wiebe

Dallas E. Wiebe, 78, passed away May 1, 2008, in Cincinnati.

He was born Jan. 9, 1930, in Newton. His parents were John P. Wiebe and O'tillie (Becker) Wiebe.

Dallas attended Roosevelt grade school, Newton Junior High and Newton High School, graduating in 1948. Dallas grew up attending First Mennonite Church in Newton and was a former member.

He attended Bethel College for two years. During that time, he met and married Virginia Schroeder of Halstead.

After serving two years in the U.S. Army Medical Corp, he returned to Bethel College and graduated in 1954, majoring in English literature.

He continued his education at the University of Michigan, receiving his master's in 1955 and his Ph.D. in 1960.

Dallas spent 31 years in the English department at Cincinnati University, teaching literature and creative writing. He authored a number of booklets on poetry and short stories. His most outstanding work was the historical novel 'Our Asian Journey,' published in 1997.

Dallas and Virginia had two children: son Garth, born in 1957, and daughter Ericka, born in 1960.

His wife, Virginia, passed away in April 2003. Also deceased are his parents, sister Ericka Stucky, sister Elsie Allison and infant brother Ronald.

Survivors include son Garth and wife, Bonniejean of Maynard, Mass.; daughter Ericka Wiebe and husband, Jed Glover of Cincinnati; six grandsons; brother, John E. and Janett of Newton, Delores Thomas of Newton, sister Esther Norton of McKinney, Texas, and Doris Dunlavy of Longmont, Colo.

A graveside service was May 7 with burial in Spring Grove Cemetary in Cincinnati.

Memorials may be made to Mennonite Arts Weekend Foundation in care of Hal Hess, 5835 Wyatt Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45213.
