Ellen Roena 'Roe' Houk
Ellen Roena 'Roe' Houk, 79,
passed away Monday (May 5, 2008) in Austin, Texas.
Roena was born on July 22,
1928, in Newton to Frank and Hazel Davis. She graduated from Newton High School
and then traveled with her three girlfriends, hitting the roller skating rinks
and enjoying the USO every weekend for a year before she married Eugene J. Houk
on March 14,1948.
They were blessed with three
children, and she contributed to the household with a variety of professions,
outside of housewife and mother, that included bookkeeper, waitress, hotel
manager, and the list goes on. Needless to say, she put family first and tried
to make sure that everyone was taken care of.
Roena had many tastes and
talents, was always the life of the party and made each occasion that she
attended special. You always knew she was there.
Her hobbies included
crosstich, knitting blankets for babies, scrapbooking and painting ceramics.
She was president of her chapter of the Red Hat Society and was active at the
Midland Senior Center.
She will be missed by
everyone that knew her.
Surviviors include her
husband, Eugene; one son, Eugene Houk Jr. and wife, Patricia; two daughters,
Gwen Jennings and Teresa Haskin and husband, Daniel; seven grandchildren,
Jessica, Carmen, Aubrey, Justin, Christina, Casey and Lindsey; and 14
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by
her parents, three brothers, and one grandson.
The family will receive
friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today Friday at Memorial Park Funeral Home in
Amarillo.
Funeral service will be at 2
p.m. Saturdayat Washington Avenue Christian Church in Amarillo.
Burial will follow in Memory
Gardens Cemetery in Amarillo under the direction of Memorial Park Funeral Home.
