Ida Gladys Horst
Ida Gladys Horst, 94, died
Tuesday (May 20, 2008) at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.
Ida was born March 29, 1914,
in Hagerstown, Md. Her parents were Adam and Cora (Grove) Eshleman.
She moved to Harrisonburg,
Va., and then went to York, Pa., to train to be a practical nurse. She
practiced nursing in Onego, W.Va., for two years and did private-duty nursing
until she married Clarence A. Horst on June 4, 1937, in Harrisonburg. He
preceded her in death on Nov. 21, 1982.
Clarence and Ida lived in
Maryland and Virginia before moving to Mountain Home, Ark., in 1945 to work in
community development and church planting. They also served in Twin Falls,
Idaho, as a pastoring couple before moving to Hesston in 1963.
Ida was a member of Hesston
Mennonite Church. She returned to nursing school at age 54 and had a career in
nursing for 15 years at Bethel Deaconess Hospital in Newton.
After retiring to Schowalter
Villa, she remained active in church and volunteer work. All who knew her loved
her.
Survivors include two daughters,
Ruby Sawin of Hesston and Twila Van Rossun of rural Newton; two sons, Donald
Horst of rural Newton and Roy Horst of Naples, Fla.; nine grandchildren; 12
great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by
a son, Delmar Horst, and a grandson.
Visitation will take place
from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Schowalter Villa Chapel in Hesston, with family
present from 6 to 8 p.m.
A private burial service will
take place Friday at Eastlawn Cemetery.
A memorial service will be at
6:30 p.m. Friday at Schowalter Villa Chapel.
Memorial donations may be
given to the Schowalter Villa Good Samaritan Fund in care of Miller Funeral
Home in Hesston, which is in charge of arrangements.
