Sam C. Richardson
Sam C. Richardson, 104,
passed away Saturday (April 19, 2008) at Newton Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 1, 1903, in
St. George, Mo., to Schuyler Colfax and Lena (Barrett) Richardson. They
preceded him in death.
Sam graduated from Oswego
High School in 1922, and he earned his bachelor's degree from Pittsburg State
University in 1927. He taught school prior to working as the Eastern Kansas
District Supervisor for the Resettlement Administration, Farm Security
Administration and Farm Home Administration during the Depression years. He
retired in 1969 from the U.S. Small Business Administration, where he was a
supervising loan officer.
He married Delphine Stout on
Aug. 14, 1929, in Emporia. She preceded him in death on May 26, 1986.
He later married Olive Roe on
July 16, 1987. She preceded him in death on March 9, 2000.
Sam was an active member of
Salem United Methodist Church in Newton. He also served on conference
committees and as a delegate to the annual conference of the Methodist Church.
He also was an active member of the Kiwanis Club, where he served in many
capacities, including attending 16 international conventions.
Sam also volunteered his time
with Asbury Park, the Council on Aging and Meals on Wheels.
He looked forward to spending
time with his many friends and loving family.
He is survived by son,
Garland Richardson of Council Grove; daughter, Arlene Lynn of Lincoln, Neb.;
brother, Allen Richardson of Oswego; sister, Harriet Boehner of Greeley, Colo.;
six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death
by two brothers and three sisters.
Visitation will be from 1 to
9 p.m. Tuesday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, with family greeting friends
from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Funeral service will be at 10
a.m. Wednesday at Salem UMC, with the Rev. Sherry Clemons of the church and
Pastor Jay Anderson of Asbury Park officiating.
Graveside service will be at
2 p.m. Wednesday at Maplewood Memorial Gardens in Emporia.
Memorial contributions may be
made to Asbury Park, Kiwanis Foundation and Salem UMC in care of the funeral
home.
