The Rev. Ira Samuel Wiley

The Rev. Ira Samuel Wiley, 88, retired Methodist pastor, died Sunday (Feb. 10, 2008).

Ira was born on Oct. 16, 1919, in Grassy Meadows, W. Va., the son of Samuel and Vella Wiley.

The family moved to Peabody and later to Newton, where Ira graduated from Newton High School.

He married Edith Rodgers in 1940. She survives of the home.

Ira worked for the Santa Fe Railroad in Newton, Chanute and Emporia for 27 years until he resigned as chief clerk for the Eastern Division.

Ira entered the ministry and served as pastor for United Methodist churches in Cedar Point, Bazaar, Hamilton, Virgil, Junction City, Moran, Bronson, Mildred, Girard, Farlington, Shawnee Mission and Oswego. He then moved back to Newton and semi-retired to Cedar Point.

Ira and Edith had been married for 67 years and were members of Trinity Heights United Methodist Church.

Ira also is survived by four sons, David of Park City, Sam (Susan) of Houston, Jon (Linda) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Tom (Lisa) of Topeka; one daughter, Ruth Solon of Park City; nine grandchildren, Shannon, Kelly, Kimberly, Sara, Mark, Misty, Brett, Rachel and Aaron; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Claude Wilhelm of Salina; sister-in-law, Zeta Rodgers Brandt of Laverne, Calif.; brother in law, Lee Rodgers of Newton; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Keith and Rowena Rodgers of San Antonio; and 13 nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his wife, family and friends.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Petersen Funeral Home, 215 N. Main in Newton, with family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at United Church of the Brethren, 520 Columbus in Newton.

Memorial funds have been set up at Newton Church of the Brethren, Newton Lions Club and Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton.
