Edwin 'Ed' Sawatzky

CORN, Okla. - Edwin "Ed" Sawatzky, 88, passed away Tuesday (Feb. 26, 2008) at Corn Heritage Village in Corn.

Ed was born on March 28, 1919, in Corn to Peter A. and Agnes (Penner) Sawatzky.

Ed received his early education at Enterprise School and later Corn Bible Academy and graduated from Corn High School in 1938. He continued working on the farm until 1940 when he and his brother, Pete, bought their first farm together.

In 1942, Ed enlisted in the Army Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1946.

On Sept. 18, 1953, he married Beatrice Friesen in Newton.

Ed continued to farm and worked as a truck driver and carpenter during the off-season. They enjoyed traveling and spending their winters in south Texas.

Ed is survived by his wife, Beatrice Sawatzky, of their home in Corn; his twin sister, Agnes Schmidt of Corn; nieces, Ruth Miller and husband, Roland, of Newton, Alnita McCarthy and husband, Terry, of Palm Springs, Calif., Betty Evans and husband, Jim, of Enid, Okla., and Gayle Sawatzky of Valley Brook, Okla.; nephew, Howard Schmidt and wife, Loretta, of Corn; and two sisters-in-law, Donna Friesen of Newton and Claudia "Bea" Friesen of Hilliord, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Pete Sawatzky and wife, Elizabeth; brother-in-law, Ruben Schmidt; and nephew, Donald Sawatzky.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Lockstone Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Corn Mennonite Brethren Church, with Pastor Aaron Juett and Tim Sandy officiating.

Burial will follow at Corn Mennonite Brethren Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Rio Grande Bible School of Edinburg, Texas.
