Alan Dale Work
Alan Dale Work, 81, passed
away Monday (Jan. 14, 2008) at Newton Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 20, 1926, in
Newton to Robert C. and Edna (Johnson) Work. They preceded him in death.
He served as a staff sergeant
for the U.S. military from June 23, 1944, to May 15, 1946. Dale held a lifetime
membership with the Newton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 971.
He met Jean Barker at the
Newton Skating Rink, which his parents owned and operated. They were married on
Nov. 10, 1944, in Walton. She survives of Newton.
Dale and Jean carried on the
family tradition, operating a roller skating rink in Arkansas City. Upon
returning from the service, Dale was employed by the Pepsi Cola Company. He
retired from there in 1988.
After retirement, Dale and
Jean moved to Council Grove, where they resided, fished and boated for nearly
16 years before moving to Newton. Dale always loved to play host and have
friends and family over.
He was an avid follower of
sports, both on television and in person. He attended many different games for
his son, grandson and neighborhood friends.
Other survivors include son,
Michael Work and wife, Debby, of El Dorado; grandson, Jeremiah Work of Austin,
Texas; and sisters, Viola Barker of Newton and Neva Belle Banion of Wichita.
Visitation will be from 9
a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton, with
family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Funeral service will be at 2
p.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel, with Chaplain Roger Megli officiating.
Burial will be at Hesston
Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be
made to Central Homecare and Hospice or any memorial of choice in care of the
funeral home.
