L.L. 'Bud' Crawley

L.L. "Bud" Crawley, 80, died Saturday (June 16, 2007) at his residence in Newton. He was born on Oct. 9, 1926, in Newton to Samuel V. and Marie C. (Garnieshi) Crawley. On July 24, 1945, he married Betty L. Roberts Miller. She survives at home. He served his country during World War II as a Fireman First Class in the United States Navy. He retired in 1985 from the Santa Fe Railroad as Yardmaster after 41 years of service. He was also the co-owner of the Newton A & W from 1968 to 1975 and the Tastee Freeze from 1972 to 1973. He was a member of the Newton Masonic Lodge No. 142 AF & AM, Harvey County Shrine Club, past member of the Elks Lodge and the American Legion all of Newton. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and Shrine of Wichita and the Railroad Yardmasters of America.

He had many interest in his life, he was an accomplished golfer and enjoyed bowling. He was inducted into the Newton Bowling Hall of Fame in 1987. He enjoyed music and playing the guitar, also HAM radio and flying. He also enjoyed camping, boating and traveling. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his many friends, loving wife and family.

Survivors include sons, Stan and Connie Crawley of Newton; Raymond and Virginia Crawley of Strafford, Mo.; a sister, LuVerna Zook of Springfield, Mo.; several nieces and nephews; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Alberta Findley.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton with family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Petersen Funeral Home with Chaplain Peter Hartman and Pastor Shawn Crawley officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton. Navy Military Honors will follow the memorial service at Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorial may be made to Hospice Care of Kansas in care of the funeral home.
