Obituary
Brian Thomas Linn, also known as "Red"
by many, died peacefully at his home on May 29, 2018, in San Antonio.
He loved his family, friends and dogs dearly, as well as his country.
Brian was born Nov. 20, 1961, in
Carlsbad, New Mexico, and was the son of Thomas H. (Tom) and Donna J.
(Shehan) Linn. Raised in Newton, he attended St. Mary Catholic Church
and graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1980. As a youth,
Brian was actively involved in Boy Scouts, was a member of the NHS
swim team and was a drummer in the NHS band. After high school, Brian
studied at Emporia State University and pledged to the Kappa Sigma
Fraternity. Brian later enlisted in the United States Navy and
graduated from the Naval Training Center in San Diego in 1986.
Brian proudly served as a Petty Officer
Second Class in the U.S. Navy, specializing in audio visual and
electronic maintenance departments as an Interior Communications
Electrician Third Class. During his time in the U.S. Navy, he
traveled to many places around the world including Hawaii, Hong Kong,
Korea, Thailand, Australia and the Philippines. He served on the USS
Mobile from 1986-1988 while he was stationed in Long Beach,
California, and on the USS Midway from 1989-1991 while he was
stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. He served on the USS Midway during
Operation Desert Storm and for her final trip at sea where she docked
for the final time in San Diego, and was later decommissioned. Brian
was then stationed at DSMC Fort Belvoir in Woodbridge, Virginia,
where he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1995.
After faithfully serving his country,
Brian relocated to San Antonio in 1997 with the company NewTek, Inc.,
where he was a lead repair technician. He later became a systems
engineer for Arris and a project engineer for Big Band Networks.
He was a home theater and electronics
enthusiast who enjoyed watching movies in his appropriately named
"Red's Home Theater." He especially enjoyed science fiction
and had a deep passion for all things Star Trek. Brian was a
self-proclaimed "Trekkie" and was extremely proud and
invested in his Star Trek memorabilia. He was also an avid
outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. Other hobbies included
building model rockets, playing pool, reading, cooking and listening
to rock 'n' roll.
Survivors include his daughter,
Tristian (Tristy) Hockett and her husband Matt of Newton; grandson,
Logan Dorrell of Newton; granddaughter, Hailey Hockett of Aurora,
Colorado; father, Tom Linn of Newton; sister, Dana Linn and her
husband Brian Wilder of Sandy, Oregon; and beloved Boxer, Tiberius.
He is preceded in death by his mother,
Donna Linn; and his three dogs: Penny, Two-Bitts and Bugsy.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2
p.m. Saturday (Aug. 18, 2018) at the American Legion, 400 S. Spencer
Rd., Newton.
