Herbert Ray Sattler

Herbert Ray Sattler, 78, a native of Newton, a 36-year resident of California and a 42-year resident of Joshua Tree, died Aug. 26, 2007, at his home. He was born to Karl M. Sattler and Clara Edith Davis-Sattler on Nov. 10, 1928. He served in the U.S. Army with a two-year tour in Germany. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps, in which he was assigned to temporary duty in Japan and was stationed in Twentynine Palms. He retired as a sergeant with a Medal of Valor. He was a blacksmith for Santa Fe for 10 years and a maintenance worker for Kaiser for 25 years. He retired 23 years ago.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

His wife of 40 years, Jeni Sattler, preceded him in death two years ago.

Survivors include a brother, Wilbur and Irene Sattler of Newton; a sister, Clara Louise Roberts of Marion; granddaughters, Shannon Bullock, who is stationed overseas, and Renee Deminay, both of Joshua Tree; stepdaughters, MaryLee Mancini of Los Angeles and Christine Welte; a stepson, Bill Welte of Joshua Tree; eight other grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A service was Aug. 31 at Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Joshua Tree with Pastor Jerel Hagerman of Joshua Springs Calvary Chapel officiating.
