Obituary
L. Irene Pierce, 93, died Monday (Oct.
29, 2018) at Newton Presbyterian Manor. She was born Sept. 10, 1925,
in Chelsea, Oklahoma, to Cyrus and Sylvia (Patton) Starns.
Irene was a graduate of Matfield Green
High School and Kansas State Teachers College (now Emporia State
University). She worked as a high school business teacher and vocal
instructor in Fall River and Matfield Green. She was retired from the
former Railroad Savings and Loan in Newton as an insurance
supervisor.
On July 6, 1945, she married Max Pierce
in Matfield Green and he survives. She was a longtime active member
of the First Baptist Church in Newton, where she freely shared her
time through the years including teaching Sunday School, singing in
the choir and as a member of the women's missionary society among her
numerous church activities. Irene and Max made many cherished friends
at their church and made many memories through the years.
Irene married the love of her life,
Max, and together they raised three children, who she adored.
Following her retirement, she and Max enjoyed traveling and
especially loved their camper trailer that they took to Texas,
Arizona and Louisiana.
Irene is survived by her daughter,
Kathy and Jim Haden of Halstead; and sons, Ron and Bonnie Pierce of
Newton and Steve and Mary Pierce of Maize. She is also survived by
six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her
parents; one sister, Phyllis Brock; and two brothers, Jack Starns and
Galen Starns.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday
(Nov. 2, 2018) at First Baptist Church in Newton, with Pastor Chip
Bungard presiding. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday (Nov.
1, 2018) at Petersen Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends
from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Restlawn Gardens of Memory,
rural Newton.
