Obituary

Arelie Ethan Schmidt, 81, died Wednesday (Dec. 5, 2018) at Schowalter Villa. He was born June 23, 1937, to Frank and Rachel (Jantz) Schmidt living in rural Tampa. Arelie graduated from the Hesston Academy in 1955 and followed that with one year at Tabor College in Hillsboro.

He was baptized and became a member of the Friedenstal Mennonite Church, rural Tampa, in September of 1957. After college, he volunteered for 1-W service at St. Luke's Hospital in Denver for two years. After that, Arelie lived in Aurora, Colorado, and held several jobs there and then became employed with the Colorado Highway Department. He was a Crew Chief of a crew that painted lanes and crosswalks in metropolitan Denver. Arelie's crew was one of the only ones using plastic in that endeavor. He retired from that line of work in 2001.

In 2004, Arelie moved to Hesston and lived in a duplex at Schowalter Villa until his death. Arelie had a few hobbies, but mainly loved to hunt and fish.

He is survived by his brother, Junia Schmidt and wife Doris (Flebeau) of Hesston; nephews, Don Rempel of Kalona, British Columbia, Canada, and Dave Rempel of Fairbury, Nebraska; and nieces: Marilyn (Fred) Root of Holmesville, Nebraska, Laurel (Karl) Louderbaugh of Yates Center, Carol (Monty) John of Chanute, Patricia (Randy) Stauffer of Hesston, Cynthia Payton of Lawrence and Paula (Troy) Martin of Milford, Nebraska.

Arelie was preceded in death by his parents; sister and her husband, Elfrieda and George Rempel; and nephew-in-law, Dave Payton.

Cremation is planned.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 15, 2018) at Schowalter Villa Chapel. Private family inurnment will take place at Peace Valley Cemetery, Durham.
