William Tanner
Obituary
On Monday (Oct. 29, 2018), William E.
Tanner lost a lifetime battle with depression and substance abuse.
William is remembered by many for his
charisma, kindness, love and deep compassion. The man who would "give
the shirt off of his back." Some of his daughters' favorite
memories are riding bikes, roller blading, building in the shop and
swimming with their father. While William gave much to this world, he
was unable to find the same love and compassion for himself. This led
him to find comfort in his addiction. Despite the deep love he had
for many, he was never able to find this for himself.
William was born in Michigan and loved
his home state. It was one of his favorite places to be because of
family and nature. William found the most joy in reading, fishing and
tinkering in the garage. He had a deep love for animals and would
often rescue strays. For the past decade, those who knew William well
knew that his best pal, "Little Man," (an American Pitbull)
would travel with him everywhere he would go. William spent his
career at AGCO and many years supporting the Union and workers'
rights.
As his depression worsened, the happy
moments became fewer and the internal hatred shattered the home and
many relationships. Many friends and family tried to help William
through his challenges - providing constant support and urging him to
seek help. William's death is a tragic end to a shattered soul.
The reality of William's death is
painful and hits many very close to home. His family asks that if you
know someone or you are someone who feels there is no hope, to know
that there is. Please reach out to the suicide prevention hotline,

please know there is a support system - one where everyone speaks the
same language and is there to help you make it one day at a time.

William is survived by his two
daughters, Amanda L. Petre and Allison P. Tuttle; his three
grandchildren, Ada Burton, Ian Burton and Corbin Petre; the mother of
his two daughters, Lisa Tanner; his mother, Martha Willis; several
siblings in Michigan including: Barb Olds of Irons, Richard Heyd of
Cadillac, Marti Riggins of Berrian Springs, Doug Heyd of Grand Blanc
and Darwin Heyd of Irons; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
William is preceded in death by his
son, Jeremy D. Tanner; his father, William E. Tanner; and his
stepfather, Jim Willis.
William's children would like to thank
those who supported them and their father through the years. Few
people can imagine the challenges that were faced, but it took a
village and they are forever grateful for the love and support
provided by the friends and family who surrounded them.
A memorial service will be held at 4
p.m. Sunday (Nov. 4, 2018) at Newton SDA Church, Second and Walnut
Street.
