After graduating from Hillsboro High School in Kansas he attended Bethel College for two years. Fred's love for 4-H kept him busy trimming calves for the county fairs and encouraging young people to be involved. This passion led him to become an IFYE (International Foreign Youth Exchange) member where he served in India for 3 months. He came to Wisconsin to work as a DHIA tester in Westby and there, through a blind date, met Joyce B. Zitzner of Viroqua. They were married on June 2, 1956 in Liberty Pole. They moved to Kansas for 2 years and returned to Joyce's family farm where he worked side-by-side with his father-in-law. In 1988 he retired from the farm at Fargo and moved to Viroqua. He soon became a beef farmer and master welder on the Larry Smith farm. Fred was a very active member of the Liberty Pole United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher, MYF mentor, and a Lay Leader for over 50 years besides being there to lend a helping hand. His joy of singing was met through the involvement of the West Prairie Singers and the Viroqua Men's Chorus. Fred will be sadly missed by family and friends.
