Obituary

Victor J. Garnica Sr., 81, died Saturday (March 2, 2019) at his home in Newton.

He was born on July 28, 1937, in Newton, the son of Carmen Natal and Frances Porras Garnica Sr. Victor attended schools in Newton. He enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corps in January 1956 and was discharged in January 1960 at Camp Pendleton, California.

Victor married Rosemary Dolores Quiroz on Oct. 26, 1963, in Union City, California. He was a sheet metal worker and a past president of the Sheet Metal Workers Union, Local #355 in Oakland, California. Through the years, he had worked at Peterbuilt Motors in Newark, California, World Airways in Oakland and the Naval Air Station in Alameda, California.

After retiring, Victor returned to Newton, where he married Gloria Jean Herrera De Lao on March 25, 1998. She died on Feb. 2, 2004.

Victor enjoyed woodworking and building projects.

Survivors include his son, Victor J. Garnica Jr. of Brentwood, California; daughter, Mariaelena Garnica of Union City, California; brothers: Jesse Garnica of Halstead, Gene Garnica of Newton, Carmen Garnica Jr. of Canyon City, Colorado, Julian Garnica of Wichita and John Garnica of California; sister, Margaret Jaso of Wichita; and one grandson, Guillermo Garnica of California.

Victor is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gloria; brother, Jack Joe Garnica; and sister, Bertha Briseno.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 10 a.m. Friday (March 8, 2019), followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Newton. Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Newton.

A memorial has been established with Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS 67114.
