Owen M. Smith
Owen M. Smith, 64, of Newton
died Wednesday (May 24, 2006) at his residence in Newton.
He was born Jan. 22, 1942, in
Hoisington to John James and Pearl Emma (Willms) Smith. On Sept. 30, 1960, he
married Jeraldine Herzog in Hutchinson. She survives of the home.
Owen worked for Westinghouse
manufacturing for nearly 20 years prior to his retirement. He was known for his
handyman skills and willingness to help anyone with their projects. He enjoyed
gardening, working around his home and collecting tools. He also took great joy
in working on the family farm with his brother Daniel. One of Owen's greatest
joys was spending time with his family, especially his three beloved grandsons.
In addition to his wife,
survivors include: daughter Kelly R. Johnston of Commerce, Texas; son Karl R.
Smith of O'Fallon, Ill.; daughter, Angela Gonzalez of Newton; brother, Daniel
Smith of Geneseo; and grandsons, A. Ryan Steffee II of Norfolk, Va., Taylor
Gonzalez of Newton and Derek Gonzalez of Newton.
He was preceded in death by
his parents and a brother, Carl J. Smith.
Services will be at 1 p.m.
Tuesday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. The Rev. Bill Hickerson of First
United Church of Christ will officiate.
The family will receive
friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at Petersen Funeral Home. Visitation is from
5 to 9 p.m. Monday. A graveside committal will follow the service at the Lyons
Municipal Cemetery.
Memorials have been
established with First Presbyterian Church and Multiple Sclerosis Society in
care of the funeral home.
