Elaine V. Davis

Elaine V. Davis, 82, died Saturday (Feb. 10, 2007) at her Newton residence.


She was born May 29, 1924, in Kinsley to Horace N. and Goldanna (Ramsden) Mathews. She married Douglad V. Davis. He preceded her in death in 1986.

Elaine attended First United Methodist Church in Newton. She was an avid reader and enjoyed watching old westerns, especially John Wayne westerns. Elaine enjoyed traveling in her retirement years, making it to Hawaii and New Zealand, among other places. She also enjoyed traveling to Oregon to see her brothers. She was a 20-year resident of Newton Plaza Apartments, where she made many friends through the years.

Elaine enjoyed gardening, and she planted peony plants around her apartment building at one time. Elaine greatly enjoyed spending time with her many friends and especially her loving family.

Survivors include a son, Doug and Verla Davis of Wichita; a daughter, Michelle and Kim Howard of Newton; brothers, Bill Mathews of Whitewater, Loran Mathews of Astoria, Mervyn Mathews of McMinnville, Ore., and Larry Mathews of Newton; sisters, Marilyn Mathews of Wichita and Glenna Stuckey of Wichita; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by two brothers and her parents.

Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel in Newton with the Rev. Nathan Morgan of First United Methodist Church in Newton officiating.

Burial will be at Walton Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Caring Hands Humane Society in care of the funeral home.
