Eugene Robert Hurst
Eugene Robert Hurst, 72, of
Newton died Friday (July 21, 2006) at his residence. He was born Dec. 22, 1933,
in Albert to William "Tim" and Hilda Mathilda (Trower) Hurst. On Oct.
16, 1969, he married Thelma (Ploutz) Crotts in Great Bend. She survives of the
home. When Eugene married Thelma, he married into a family of eight children -
seven girls and one boy. Thelma and Eugene later had one son together. He was a
member of the former Peace Lutheran Church in Newton and sang in the church
choir. Eugene retired as manager for Wonder Bread in 1994. He enjoyed
completing puzzles and following his sports teams, the Denver Broncos and St.
Louis Cardinals.
He entertained children and
adults playing Santa Claus for many years. He greatly enjoyed spending time
with his wife, children and their families and many friends.
Hurst was a U.S. Navy
veteran.

John F. Crotts of Great Bend and Craig A. Hurst of Wichita; daughters, Virginia
Hartley of Orange, Texas, Linda and Joe Jacobi of Fort Worth, Texas, Janet and
Dave Blackburn of Manhattan, Debbie Wheat and Pete Reyes of Albuquerque, N.M.,
Sonya and Reuben Gomez of Ridge Crest, Calif., Charlene and Larry Siemens of
Newton, and Lori and Mike Farrar of Brandon, Miss.; brother, Walter
"Walt" Hurst of Los Vegas; sister, Dorothy Tourniar of Great Bend; 21
grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30
a.m. Wednesday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. The Rev. Mike Fibrand of
Trinity Lutheran Church and Chaplain Peter Hartman of Hospice Care of Kansas
will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9
a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Petersen Funeral Home. The
family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Petersen Funeral
Home. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
A memorial has been
established with Hospice Care of Kansas in care of the funeral home.
