Katie Dick Wilke
SPOKANE, Wash. - Katie Dick
Wilke, 99, died July 16, 2006, in Spokane, Wash. She was born on March 28,
1907, to Anna and Peter Dick in Landskrone, Ukraine, Russia. She married Herman
Wilke on Sept. 7, 1929. He preceded her in death on Dec. 6, 1991. Katie worked
at the Centennial Flour Mill in Spokane and later did catering. She was
baptized at First Mennonite Church in Newton and was a lifetime member. She was
a member of the German-American Society in Spokane. She enjoyed traveling,
decorating her home and gardening. Katie survived the Russian Revolution. She
emigrated with her family in 1922 at the age of 16 and was a refugee in Turkey
for more than a year while awaiting the quota to come to the United States.
Survivors include: a brother
and sister-in-law, Waldo and Doris Dick of Grabill, Ind.; four nephews; and a
niece.
She also was preceded in
death by two sisters and a brother.
Burial was in Greenwood
Cemetery. Memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at First Mennonite Church
in Newton, with Pastor Joan Boyer officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials
have been established with the church.
