Verna M. Leckington,
86, of Cheney died Thursday (Oct. 19, 2006) at Via Christi-St. Francis campus
in Wichita.
She was born March 24, 1920, in Monavista, Colo., to Archie E. and
Ruth Ellen (Wimmer) Porter. On May 1, 1938, she married Vernon Leckington in
Newton. He preceded her in death. Verna was a member of the First United
Methodist Church in Cheney. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, making many
fine blankets and bedspreads for her family and friends. Verna enjoyed camping
and boating with her husband and spending time gardening.
Survivors include a daughter,
Charlotte K. (Leckington) Miller of Cheney; a son, Darwin Leckington of
Wichita; sister Marita Walla of Chino Valley, Ariz; a brother, Arley Porter of
Newton; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by
her husband, Vernon Leckington; parents; and a brother, Elvin Porter.
Service will be at 10 a.m.
Monday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. The Rev. David Leckington of First
Presbyterian Church in Downing, Calif., will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood
Cemetery in Newton. Visitation will be from 1 to
5 p.m. Sunday at the Petersen Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been
established with the American Heart Association.
