Freda M. Spangler

Freda M. Spangler, 95, retired elementary English teacher, passed away on Wednesday (Oct. 25, 2006) at Asbury Park in Newton. She was born on Oct. 11, 1911, in Harvey County to Ira and Mamie (Dibble) Spangler. She was an elementary English teacher who started her career in Dodge City. She later was employed in the Newton school district, retiring in 1988. She enjoyed traveling and made several trips to Europe. She was a lifetime member of Salem United Church and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Association.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Wanda Gutshall of Spokane, Wash., and Hazel, who died at an early age.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews, and many cousins, which were created by her parents raising seven cousins from her mother's sister after their parents died at an early age.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton.

Viewing will be available from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. A family representative will greet friends and family from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials have been established for Salem United Methodist Church in Newton, in care of the funeral home.
