Dr. Bryan G. Chaffee

TANZANIA, AFRICA - Dr. Bryan G. Chaffee, 38, died Wednesday (Oct. 25, 2006) on the Island of Zanzibar, Tanzania, Africa.

He was born June 17, 1968, at Newton to Myron G. and Karen L. Chaffee. He was preceded in death by his brother Brent. He graduated from Hesston High School in 1986 and from The University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1994.

He was licensed as a physician in California in 1995 and completed his emergency residency in 1997. Dr. Chaffee was an emergency room doctor at California Pacific Hospital in San Francisco. He recently had taken a leave of absence to join the Doctors Without Borders program and had been assigned to Darfur, Sudan. He has done medical volunteer work around the world, including Peru and Pakistan. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends he made on his life's journey serving his fellow man.

He is survived by his parents; two sisters, Tamera Chaffee of Newton and Teresa and Bill Haliburton of Ulysses; a brother, Jason Chaffee of San Francisco; a nephew, Christopher Haliburton of Ulysses; and former wife and good friend Kieko Chaffee of San Francisco.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Golden Plains Free Methodist Church in rural Newton.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, with family receiving friends from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Doctors Without Borders USA, Australian Aid International or the American Cancer Society in care of Petersen Funeral Home in Newton.
