Kittie Ann
Fegley
Kittie Ann
(Howell) Fegley, 95, went to be with the Lord and her family on Oct. 21, 2006.
Kittie was
born Aug. 7, 1911, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Job and Ida Howell.
Kittie moved
to Newton from Lincoln when she was just 18 to enter nurse's training at Axtell
Hospital. Soon, she met Richard Fegley. She and Dick, along with his brother,
David, and her friend Elizabeth Hilt, went to Hutchinson and got married on
April 7, 1930.
Richard went
to the Army engineers when World War II happened. Kittie worked as a blueprint
inspector of B29s at Boeing Aircraft in Wichita.
Kittie
became very well known in Newton and Harvey County. She and four partners owned
and operated the Newton Appliance Center for many years.
She was a
member of Salem United Methodist Church, Soroptomist International, American
Legion Auxiliary and other professional and service organizations. She received
many honors while serving. One year, Kittie was chosen Soroptomist Woman of the
Year.
Kittie had
to her credit 1,000-plus hours as a volunteer. When Vietnamese immigrants
needed to learn English, Kittie taught them. She volunteered a lot at Asbury
Park, pushing wheelchairs and answering the phone, etc.
After
retirement at age 72 as the financial officer of the Newton Appliance Center,
Kittie enjoyed traveling to many places in the world. She spent many happy days
with her daughters and four granddaughters.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; nine siblings; her husband; daughter June
Boaz; and granddaughter Jaime (Boaz) Dubitsky.
She is
survived by daughter Iris Hamilton of Leawood (where Kittie lived the last two
years); granddaughters Julianne West, Kim Sheppard and husband Bruce of the
Kansas City area, and Tracy Boaz of St. Louis; great-grandchildren Michael,
Matthew and Nicholas West, Breanne and Tyler Sheppard, and Leslee and John
Hapfinger. Mourning her are several nieces and nephews, especially Nancy Lewis
and husband Ben Turner of Elbing.
Long ago,
Kittie donated her body to The University of Kansas School of Medicine.
Memorial
service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Salem United Methodist Church in Newton.
One day, her
ashes will be with Richard in the Fegley plot in Greenwood Cemetery.
The family
requests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or the American
Diabetes Association.
Goodbye,
mother. We love you.
