Donovan H.
Smith, 78, Newton, died Friday (Nov. 17, 2006) at Newton Medical Center.
He was born
May 25, 1928 at Newton to Harold A. and Ruby (Hawkey) Smith. On Aug. 11, 1948,
he married Betty Lou McClure at Walton. She survives of the home.
Donovan was
a member of the Salem United Methodist Church of Newton where he served on
various boards and capacities including lay leader. He was a member of the
Newton Elks Lodge were he served as exalted ruler. Donovan also served as
district deputy for the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He worked for various
supply companies in Newton including Evans product.
Donovan
greatly enjoyed RVing, boating and working in his yard. He looked forward to
spending time with his loving family and many friends who would often find him
engrossed in a word search.
He also
survived by three sons, John and wife Karol Smith of East Forday, Mi., Ken
Smith of Alma and Richard Smith of Newton; two daughters, Michelle and husband
Richard Pettegrew of Maize and Donita and husband Steve Eye of Newton; 23
grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin and Gerald Smith; a sister, Betty J.
McClure; and his parents.
Visitation
will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday with the family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8
p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home.
Funeral
service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Salem United Methodist Church with the
Rev. Sherry Clemons officiating.
Memorials
are with the Salem United Methodist Family Life Center in care of the funeral
home.
