Hershberger, Glen D

The Newton Kansan

Glen D. Hershberger

Glen D. Hershberger, 70, of Newton died Sunday (Nov. 19, 2006) at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

He was born May 11, 1936, at Bethel Deaconess Hospital in Newton to Elmer Day and Amy (Erb) Hershberger. On Dec. 28, 1957, he married Jane Epp in Henderson, Neb. She survives of the home.

Glen was a member of Salem United Methodist Church of Newton, where he served on the finance committee, the endowment committee, Trustees and building committee, and was chairman of the administrative board. He was a past member of the Newton Board of Realtors, Jaycees, Newton Chamber of Commerce, Newton ToastMasters and the American Field Society. He currently was serving his ninth year as a member of the Harvey County Parks and Recreation advisory board. In this capacity, he was instrumental in establishing the Youth Hunting Program.

He was owner of Hershberger & Slack Insurance and Real Estate Co.

Glen attended Zimmerdale Grade School, was a 1954 graduate of Newton High School and a 1960 graduate of Bethel College.

A lifelong Newtonian, Glen was an avid fisherman and hunter and passed his enthusiasm for the outdoors to his sons and grandchildren. He had a passion for conserving our natural resources and worked diligently to improve the habitat for wildlife. This included the planting of thousands of trees and shrubs on his land, as well as at Harvey County East Lake and filter strips to protect the water along Cedar Creek in Chase County.

He considered his family his greatest legacy. This includes his sons, Tim and wife Julie Hershberger and their children, Taylor and Jaelyn of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Todd and wife Alison and their children, Hilary Jane, Abigail and William of Overland Park; and the Rev. Michael Glen and wife Susan Hershberger and their children, Cameron, Zachary, Ellen Jane and Mary of Sofia, Bulgaria.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Willis, Robert and James; and sisters Elizabeth Spicher and Edith Dunn.

A celebration of Glen's life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Salem United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sherry Clemons officiating. Following this service, a lunch will be served with the family greeting friends at that time.

Memorials have been established for Salem United Methodist Church and Mission to the World, Bulgaria, in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
