Emma L.
Stewart, 77, died Wednesday (Nov. 22, 2006) at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in
Wichita.
Emma L.
Stewart was born on June 1, 1929, in Peabody to John F. [B.] Gertrude (Stryker)
Topham. She married Ronald L. Stewart on Dec. 18, 1974. He preceded her in
death. She graduated from Peabody High School in 1947 and attended the
University of Bellevue in Bellevue, Neb. Emma also attended Bethel College.
She worked
for the ITT corporation at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Neb., from 1976
until 1988.
Emma was a
member of the Kansas Women's Bowling Association and the Kansas Women's Golf
Association. She was an avid collector of patent medicine tins and enjoyed
giving presentations of her collection. Emma enjoyed bridge and belonged to
several bridge clubs. She greatly enjoyed reading both fiction and non-fiction
novels.
She is
survived by daughters, Ginny Reid Matern of Salisbury, Md., Julia Ann Carroll
of Evanston, Ill., Elaine Davis of Newton; step-daughters Linda Stewart Wright
of Papillion, Neb., Cindy Stewart King of Hailey, Ind.; brothers, Howard Topham
of Aldarado, Texas, John Topham of Peabody and Robert Topham of Wichita.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; sisters Audrey Boothe, Eula Jennings, Doris
Quinton, Olive Ax; and brothers, Wayne and Darwin Topham. She also leaves four
grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 15 step-grandchildren.
Memorial
service will be at 2 p.m. today at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton with the
Rev. Phil Fischer presiding. The family will have a private family inurnment.
In lieu of
flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bethel College Performing Arts
in care of the funeral home.
