Vernon L. Leckington
CHENEY -- Vernon L. Leckington, 86,
retired truck driver, died Sunday (April 15, 2001) at St. Francis Via
Christi Regional Medical Center in Wichita.
He was born Sept. 18, 1914, to Thair
LeRoy and Margaret (Brooks) Leckington in Newton. They preceded him
in death. He married Verna Porter May 1, 1938, in Newton. She
survives.
He was a retired truck driver and
worked as a park attendant for the Army Corps of Engineers for 14
years after retiring with his wife. He was a life member of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 971 of Newton and a member of the
American Legion Wayne G. Austin Post No. 2. He enjoyed fishing,
boating, waterskiing and camping. He also enjoyed old westerns and
"Gunsmoke." He moved to Cheney from Newton a year and a
half ago.
Other survivors include: a son, Darwin
Leckington of Wichita; a daughter, Charlotte Miller of Cheney; a
sister, Helen Peak of Terre Haute, Ind.; nine grandchildren; and 20
great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by: two
brothers, Forest Leckington and Maurice M. "Bob"
Leckington; and a sister, Thelma Keller.
Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m.
today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Petersen Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m.
Thursday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. C. Kent Rogers
officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with
the American Diabetes Association in care of the funeral home.
