Olin J. Schmidt

Funeral for Olin J. Schmidt, 91, of Inman, was 2 p.m. Monday at Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church, Inman, with Pastor Willmar Harder officiating. Burial followed in Hoffnungsau Cemetery.


Mr. Schmidt died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at Pleasant View Home in Inman.

He was born July 31, 1912, in Harvey County, to Jacob F. and Maria Dyck Schmidt.

A farmer and carpenter, he had farmed in the Inman and Kalvesta areas. He volunteered as a carpenter to help build numerous churches, including Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Ind., and the Mission Hospital in what was then Zaire, Africa.

Mr. Schmidt was a member of Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church, Inman, and had taught Sunday school for many years.

On May 26, 1935, he married Tillie E. Nachtigal at Inman. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Wayne Schmidt of Inman; two daughters, Mary Schmidt of Moundridge, and Joyce Mills of Kansas City, Mo.; his twin brother, Otto Schmidt of Inman; two sisters, Lydia Ediger of Inman, and Rubena Friesen of Hesston; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Buller; a grandson; and two brothers, John D. and Eldo D. Schmidt.

Memorials are suggested to Pleasant View Home, Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church, Mennonite Central Committee or Mennonite Disaster Service, all in care of Buhler Mortuary, 120 N. Main St., Buhler, KS 67522.
