Herman J.
Janzen, 73, died Friday (April 20, 2007) at Newton Medical Center.
He was born
on Feb. 16, 1934, in Newton to John P. and Helene (Claassen) Janzen. On July
25, 1955 he married Ruth E. Claassen. She preceded him in death April 1996. On
Dec. 27, 1998, he married Shirley Reed. She survives him at home. He was a
member of Zion Mennonite Church (deacon, Church Board chairman, Sunday school
teacher, Sexton of church cemetery); served on Remington school board, Bethel
College board of directors, chairman of the board of directors of the Peabody
State Bank, was founding member of Mennonite Agri-Urban Inc., an spent two
years in alternative service at Menninger's Clinic in Topeka.
Survivors
include children, Bruce and Jeannine Janzen of Elbing; Susan Janzen of Cedar
Falls, Iowa; Lisa and Michael Scott of Newton; Russell and Kris Janzen of rural
Newton; a brother-in-law, Paul Longacre and wife Nancy Heisey of Harrisonburg,
Va.; a sister, Edna and Ted Zabel of Dayton, Ohio; step-children, Paula and
Dean Claycamp of Wichita; Cathey and Don Ketterman of Houston, Texas; and
Marsha and Roger Geyer of Derby; seven grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren;
and eight step-great-grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by a sister, Doris Longacre.
Visitation
will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Lamb Funeral Home in Whitewater, with
family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Service will
be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Mennonite Church in Elbing with the Rev. Bruce
Bradshaw officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Mennonite
Church Cemetery.
Memorial
funds may be made to Mennonite Agri-Urban or The Greater Newton Community
Foundation in care of the funeral home.
