Margaret A. Hankins
WICHITA - Margaret A.
Hankins, 89, died Friday (Dec. 2, 2005) at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice Center
at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. Margaret was born May 29, 1916, to Gustav
A. and Mary Elizabeth (Bunk) Redman in Emporia. Her parents preceded her in
death. She married Albert E. Hankins on Feb. 1, 1936, in Emporia. They later
moved to Newton, where they raised their family. Margaret and Albert celebrated
36 years of marriage before his death in 1972. Margaret was a faithful member
of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newton. She belonged to St. Mary's Altar
Society and the Daughters of Isabella, where she made many lifelong
friendships.
She was also a member of the
UTU ladies auxiliary; the ladies of ELKS; and EHU.
Margaret was a devoted wife,
mother and homemaker who enjoyed cooking, baking and sewing for her family. In
1972 after the death of her husband, she began studying bookkeeping at Wichita
Vo-Tech school. She was employed as a bookkeeper by the North Newton Co-op
until her retirement. After her retirement, she volunteered at the Newton Area
Senior Center. She enjoyed dancing for more than 20 years until the death of
her dancing partner, Carl Mull. Margaret also enjoyed playing bridge, reading
and spending time with her family and many friends. She was an avid Atlanta
Braves baseball fan.
In 1998, Margaret moved to
Friendly Acres Retirement Community, where she was a cottage resident. The past
four years, Margaret lived on Aspen Assisted Living Unit. During her seven
years at Friendly Acres, she made many new and dear friends and enjoyed a
variety of activities.
Margaret is survived by her
daughters, Betty Williamson and husband Pat of Ponca City, Okla., Frances Quint
and husband Gene of Newton; son Chris Hankins and wife Elizabeth of Ooltewah,
Tenn.; a son Terrence L. Hankins and wife Monica of Newton; and son-in-law
William G. Nyquist Jr. of Topeka also survives. She is survived by a niece,
Mary Ann Redman Gabel of Topeka, and cousins Barbara Jean Bradshaw of Emporia
and Mary Catherine Korte of Arkansas City.
Other survivors include 18
grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Margaret's grandchildren are Carisia
Cantrell, Brian Nyquist, Mary Palmer, Kathy Flattery, Jo Ellen Martin, John
Flattery, John Quint, Michael Quint, Manasseh Davis, Christina Rossiter, Amanda
Hankins, Joshua Hankins, Justin Hankins, Rachael Hankins, Crystal Eason, Ernie
Dochow, Brian Dochow and Christopher Dochow.
Margaret was preceded in
death by her father Gustav Redman, mother Mary Redman, husband Albert Hankins
and daughter Barbara Nyquist on April 22, 2005. She also was preceded in death
by her sister Ann Freeman and brothers Joseph, Ernest, John and Bernard Redman.
Visitation will be until 9
p.m. tonight at Petersen Funeral Home.
Holy rosary and vigil will be
7 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. Following the rosary will be a time of
sharing and fellowship with the family.
Funeral mass will be 10 a.m.
Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Jim Mainzer of St. Mary's
officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials
can be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, Harry Hynes Hospice and Newton Area
Senior Center in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
