Charles Eugene Miles
Charles Eugene Miles, 79,
died Wednesday (Dec. 7, 2005) in Topeka. He was born March 4, 1926, to Willy P.
and Frances P. (Robinson) Miles in Bucyrus, Mo. They preceded him in death.
Gene worked for the Soil Conservation Service office in Newton for 30 years and
retired in January 1987. During his lifetime Gene was a very active individual.
He was a member of the Newton Bible Church of Newton and served on the
Hospitality Committee for the men's prayer breakfast at the church. He served
on the Harvey Bible Conference Board of Directors, was the activities
coordinator for "golden agers" at Schowalter Villa and was an usher
for the Villa Chapel functions. He was a volunteer driver for the Villa
residents. Earlier in his life he worked for Jake Schowalter on the farm before
going to the U.S. Army to serve during World War II. When he returned from the
service in 1946, he married Margaret Sangals Oct. 3, 1946, and then went back
to work for Jake Schowalter. He then worked for a time for Farrell & Cook
grocery store, then managed his own delivery service, "Merchant
Delivery," delivering groceries and laundry for Newton residents and
businesses. Also, he worked for Newton Auto & Tractor in the parts
department.
Survivors include: a
daughter, Diane K. (Miles) Hitchens and husband Steve of Topeka; a grandson,
Jared and Sarah Hitchens; a brother, James W. Miles of Chico, Calif.; and a
granddaughter, Jenni and Sam Lindner.
He also was preceded in death
by; his wife, Margaret H. (Sangals) Miles; and a brother, H. Clayton Miles.
Funeral service will be 2:30
p.m. Saturday at Newton Bible Church with Pastor Don Myers officiating.
Burial will be in Mound
Township Cemetery in rural Moundridge.
Memorials have been
established with Gideons International and Newton Bible Christian School, both
in care of Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.
