Naida Elaine Sauerwein

Naida Elaine Sauerwein died Thursday (Dec. 15, 2005). She was born Aug. 1, 1929, in Texhoma, Texas, to Everett and Mildred (Bartlett) Allen. At age 8, her family moved to Newton. A graduate of Newton High School, she was a secretary at Central Securities until her marriage to Ardith Sauerwein on Dec. 28, 1949. They raised five children on a dairy farm in rural Newton. The family was active in 4-H, church and community service. An avid folk artisan, she worked at The Yarn Shop and retired from Prairie View after 23 years in the Creative Arts Department.

Elaine shared her interest in folk arts with local school groups, regional and state cultural events. She was active in politics, serving the Democratic Party at county and state levels. She was a delegate and member of the platform committee for the 1976 National Democratic Convention. She served on the Newton school board for eight years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and stepfather, Frank McLean. She is survived by her husband, Ardith; a sister, Beverly Stackhouse, Pensacola, Fla.; a brother, James R. Allen, Salina; daughters, Carol Trout, Scott City, Jean Schmidt, Topeka, and Anita Davis, Newton; sons, Richard Sauerwein, Groton, Conn., and Jim Sauerwein, Newton; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Family visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church. Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church. Cremation and burial will be in Highland Cemetery, rural Newton.

Memorials have been established with the Harvey County 4-H Development Fund and Trinity Heights United Methodist Church Music Program, in care of Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.
