Virgil P. Schmidt
Virgil P. Schmidt, 67, died Monday
(Feb. 10, 2003) at his residence in North Newton. He was born March
24, 1935, to Arnold T. and Marie G. (Flaming) Schmidt in Goessel.
They preceded him in death. He married Doris Jane Mendel Aug. 30,
1959, in Freeman, S.D. She survives of the home. He was raised on the
family farm near Goessel and attended Greenfield Elementary School,
Goessel High School and Bethel College. He lived in Newton from 1959
to 1965 when he moved to North Newton.
He had been employed by the Hesston
Corporation for 15 years, Excel for 10 years and Kidron Inc. for five
years before working for Bethel College as the director of grounds
for the past 15 years, doing landscaping and yard maintenance. He
was a member of Faith Mennonite Church in Newton. He enjoyed fishing
and being outside.
Survivors include: a son, Keith V.
Schmidt of Omaha, Neb.; two daughters, Kathy M. Steely of Hewitt,
Texas, and Karma J. Kauffman of Tulsa, Okla.; a sister, Luella
Schmidt of Hesston; two brothers, Arlo D. Schmidt or rural Newton and
Orville A. Schmidt of Elbing; and five grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by a
sister; Wilma Schmidt.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 a. m.
Wednesday with family greeting friends from 7 to 9 p. m. at Broadway
Colonial Funeral Home.
Private family graveside service will
be Thursday at Tabor Mennonite Church Cemetery.
Memorial service will be 7 p. m.
Thursday at Faith Mennonite Church with Pastor Gordon Smith
officiating.
