Keith Gordon Lucas

Graveside services for Keith Gordon Lucas, 85, Lawrence, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Lucas died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Nov. 17, 1916, in Great Bend, the son of John and Bessie Lucas. He attended school in Newton, where his father was a conductor for Santa Fe Railroad.

Mr. Lucas was a Dillons grocery manager for 43 years. He began working for Dillons in Newton before serving in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He returned to Dillons after the war and managed stores in Pratt and Hutchinson. He moved to Lawrence in 1960 to open the fist Dillons in Lawrence at 19th and Massachusetts streets. He remained manager there until he retired in 1981.

He was a Mason and vice president of Lawrence Chamber of Commerce. He was also worked with Lawrence High School job training programs. He was a member of First United Presbyterian Church in Hutchinson and of the Lawrence Country Club and Alvamar.

He married Virdean Davis in 1936 in Emporia. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include three daughters, Darla Westbrook, Springdale, Ark., and Janice Arnold and Karen Pahl, both of Lawrence; a sister, LaVonne Calloway, Tyler, Tex.; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

A son, Gordon, died earlier.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to noon Monday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, where family will greet friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

The family suggests memorials to Visiting Nurses Assn., or American Heart Assn., sent in care of the mortuary.
