Edgar 'Ed' L. Gates

Edgar Lantis "Ed" Gates, 95, died Saturday (Feb. 24, 2007) at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.

He was born on Aug. 31, 1911, to Leslie and Anna (Lantis) Gates in Newton.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1934 to 1938 and during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He was chief boatswain's mate, aboard the Destroyer, USS Mississippi, Destroyer Escort, USS Breman and the Destroyer Escort USS Bates. He actively participated in USS Bates reunions since his discharge.

He married Margaret S. Dudte on May 3, 1940, in Newton. She died on Jan. 16, 1988.

He retired from USD 373 in the maintenance department. He was a member of St. Luke's Presbyterian Church. He liked to duck hunt, fish and go for brisk walks. His warm, cheerful "hello" will be missed.

Survivors include son and wife, William J. and Glenna Gates of San Antonio; granddaughter and husband, Julie and Brad Hamilton, of Cardiff, Wales; grandson and wife, Paul and Rachel Gates of Dallas; and great-grandchildren, Harper and Brook Hamilton of Cardiff.

He also was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with family greeting friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home Chapel in Newton with Rev. Paul Wissink officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.

Memorials may be made to St. Luke's Presbyterian Church in lieu of flowers in care of the funeral home.
