Phillip L. Scott
Phillip L. Scott, 75, died
Sunday (Feb. 19, 2006) at Newton Medical Center. He was born Nov. 3, 1930, to
Hugh L. and Millicent Marie (Austin) Scott in Arkansas City. They preceded him
in death. He married Myrna Sue Williamson in 1959 in Wichita. She survives of
the home. Phil served in the United States Air Force and then went on to earn
his bachelor's and master's degrees from Emporia State University. He taught
social studies at Newton High School for 32 years. Phil started the tennis
program for the Newton School District and coached tennis for 28 years. He was
inducted into the Kansas High School Tennis Hall of Fame in 2001. During his
tenure as a coach at NHS, he led the Railroaders to two Ark Valley League
Championships, 15 regional titles, and his teams finished in the top four in
the state on five occasions. Phil was actively involved in organizing and
running summer tennis programs for the Newton Recreation Commission for 20
years. He was an active outdoorsman and traveler throughout his life. Phil
loved to photograph the images he found in the natural and cultural worlds.
Other survivors include:
sons, Grant Scott and Dalton Scott, both of Newton; a daughter, Cay and Jim
Klaassen of Long Valley, N.J.; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1 to
9 p.m. today at Petersen Funeral Home.
Graveside service will be
2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Layne of St.
Matthew's Episcopal Church officiating.
Memorials have been
established with the Phil Scott Tennis Center at Newton High School in care of
the funeral home.
