Leona C. Schrag
Leona C. Schrag, 86, died
Friday (June 1, 2007) at Kidron Bethel Health Care in North Newton. She was
born on Oct. 11, 1920, in Pretty Prairie to Edward W. and Carry (Stucky)
Graber. On Aug. 18, 1940, she married Howard J. Schrag at the First Mennonite
Church in Pretty Prairie. She was a member of Bethel College Mennonite Church
in North Newton. She worked as a proofreader for the Pretty Prairie Times, and
she also served as a church and hospital secretary. Her life with Howard was an
adventurous taking them through various voluntary service assignments in Paris,
British Columbia and Arizona where she worked with people in nursing care.
Their travels included the Mennonite World Conference in Amsterdam, several
European countries and the Holy Land. A mission tour took them to Japan,
Thailand and Hong Kong. They later traveled to Africa and South America. She
loved painting and had a passion for health foods. During their travels in
Women's Mission Society, she gave seminars and workshops on the benefits of
health foods. Another passion was her church where she spent early years in
many volunteer roles including making quilts. She was a loving wife, mother,
grandmother, and great-grandmother who enjoyed the company of her family and
many friends.
Survivors include her husband
of North Newton; a son, Howard and Judy Schrag of Port orchard, Wash.;
grandson, Mike Schrag and Kelly Regal of Thousand Oaks, Calif;
andgreat-grandsons, Zachary Regal Schrag and Owen Regal Schrag both of Thousand
Oaks, Calif.
She was preceded in death be
her parents.
Visitation will be from 9
a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton.
Service will be at 10:30 a.m.
Thursday at Bethel College Mennonite Church with the Rev. Heidi Regier Kreider
officiating. A private family burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.
