Marvin Schmidt
Marvin Schmidt was born to John J and
Anna (Schmidt) Schmidt, on February 22, 1930, in Alfalfa Co. Oklahoma
near Goltry. He passed away on December 26, 2020, at the Halstead
Health and Rehab, Halstead Kansas, reaching the age of ninety years.
Marvin's childhood was spent in the
Goltry and Jet Oklahoma communities. It was here he received his
formal eight years of education.
At the tender age of fourteen years, he
heard the call of God to salvation and he answered. On April 27, 1944
he was baptized by Min. David J Koehn into the Church of God in
Christ Mennonite, Goltry, Oklahoma.
In September of 1952, Marvin left for
1-W service in Roseburg, Oregon. Just over a year later he came home
on a three-week vacation and was married to me, Betty Smith, on
November 29, 1953, by Min. Norman Eicher, at Burns Kansas. Together
we returned to Roseburg and completed just over another year of
service. During this time, a daughter was born to us.
After 1-W service, we returned to make
our home in the Burns community and were blessed with another
daughter. Marvin spent his time in carpenter work, custom haying and
harvesting, also working some years at the American Trailer factory
in Newton, and at Hesston Corporation as a welder. He is remembered
to be a particular person. He liked a place for everything and
everything in its place.
Dad and Mom were active members of the
church, spending ten years as janitors, also an enjoyable and very
dedicated ten years as youth leaders. Dad will be remembered for his
love of singing and memorizing songs. He shared openly his concern
for his close family members spiritual welfare, often mentioning them
in prayer. He left a clear testimony of being ready to go, leaving no
question of his eternal salvation.
He is survived by his wife of
sixty-seven years, Betty; two daughters, Gloria and Karl Koehn,
Leland Mississippi, and Barbara and Steve Koehn, Newton, Kansas,
seven grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, brother-in-law John
and Norma Smith, five sisters-in-law, Irene Smith, Velma and Verlin
Koehn, Vivian and Crist Swarey, Winnie Smith, Hope Becker, and two
nieces, Denise Fox and Leslie Roberts and many other relatives and
friends.
He was preceded in death by his
parents, one brother, one sister, five brothers-in-law, and one
sister-in-law.
