 Helfer, James The Newton Kansan James Helfer James "Jim" Helfer, 91, died Tuesday (March 6, 2007) at St. Luke Living Center in Marion.
 He was born on March 1, 1916, to James A. and Mary Ellen (MacClaren) 
Helfer in Tonawanda, N.Y. He proudly served in the armed forces during 
W.W.II from 1939 to 1946 serving in the European theatre. Jim married 
Doris on Oct. 10, 1944. They spent most of their married life in Newton 
before moving to Marion County Lake in 1985. His wife of 62 years 
survivors at home.
 
 He was a retired car salesman and 
businessman, active and lifetime member of the Masons, VFW, American 
Legion, Lions Club and served many positions at First Methodist Church 
in Newton. He was an avid golfer who officially scored three holes in 
one. He also enjoyed fishing and camping. His life philosophy was to 
make life more pleasant for others. He never met a stranger and always 
had a smile and cheerful hello for everyone. His family enjoyed his good
 sense of humor and quick laughter.
 
 Survivors include two 
daughters, Judi and David Burkett of Hesston and Vicki and Kevin Hoffer 
of Marion; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three 
great-great-grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews.
 
 He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Elizabeth and Bernice.
 
 Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Eastmoor United Methodist 
Church in Marion. Graveside Services Will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at
 Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.
