Dorothy Lewis

Dorothy Lewis, 86, of Newton died on Tuesday (March 13, 2007) at Newton Medical Center in Newton.

She was born on Dec. 7, 1920, in rural Burlington to Albert Cobb and Anna (Rasmussen) Wilson. On May 10, 1950, she married William E. Lewis in Enid, Okla. He preceded her in death on April 26, 1995. She was an active member of First Christian Church in Newton for 51 years where she taught Sunday school and was in the Chancel and hand-bell choir. She graduated from Phillips University in Enid. She taught elementary school until her retirement. She greatly enjoyed watercolor and pastel painting. She shared her paintings with her many friends and family. She was a lifelong reader and learner who enjoyed sharing her talents with others. She was a member of the Newton Fine Arts Association and also enjoyed gardening and tending her flowers. She especially enjoyed spending time with her many friends and loving family.

Survivors also include a son, Neal Lewis of Newton; a son, Donald Lewis of Arlington, Texas; a sister, Marjorie Barron of Beatrice, Neb.; a sister, Garland Asman of Salina; a sister, Evelyn Nicholson of San Carlos, Mexico; and two grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by an infant brother and sister, and her parents.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday with family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton.

Service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at First Christian Church in Newton with the Rev. Gary Bell officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.

Memorials may be sent to First Christian Church Education Fund, Newton Fine Arts Association or Friends of the Newton Library in care of the funeral home.
